What crawlability means
A crawlable website allows automated systems to request pages, follow links, and understand the site structure. Crawlability is not the same as indexing, but pages usually need to be discoverable and accessible before they can be evaluated effectively.
Start with normal links and status codes
Important pages should be reachable through standard internal links. They should normally return successful HTTP responses instead of chains of redirects, server errors, or soft error pages. Broken navigation can waste crawler time and frustrate users.
Robots directives and noindex
Robots.txt can control crawling, while meta robots directives can influence indexing. These tools are useful, but mistakes can accidentally hide important sections. Review them after redesigns, migrations, staging changes, and plugin updates.

Use a crawl sample as a warning system
A small audit cannot guarantee that every page is healthy, but it can reveal patterns: repeated metadata, missing headings, error responses, thin pages, or inconsistent templates. When a sample uncovers a pattern, expand the investigation across the affected section.
